When sailors dream of tropical cruising, they usually picture a sailing flotilla in the Caribbean or French Polynesia.
Rarely does Brazil make the list.
And that’s exactly what makes it so special.
In June 2026, the Nautilus Alumni community set sail from the colonial town of Paraty to explore one of the world’s most overlooked cruising destinations: Brazil’s spectacular Costa Verde, where the Atlantic Forest tumbles from towering granite mountains into a sea unlike anywhere else.
Inside the countless islands and protected bays, the water glows an extraordinary emerald green. Venture outside into the open Atlantic and the scenery changes completely, with deep blue ocean swells crashing against giant granite boulder islands before giving way once again to calm tropical anchorages.
It feels wild.
Untouched.
And wonderfully undiscovered.
Our small fleet consisted of two distinctly Brazilian yachts: a Delta 46 monohull and a Catflash 43 performance catamaran. Both are world-class Brazilian designs that few international sailors ever have the opportunity to helm. The reward? Fast, responsive sailing, with the Catflash regularly reaching double-digit speeds while remaining remarkably comfortable.
This wasn’t simply another sailing flotilla vacation.
It was the kind of adventure that’s becoming increasingly difficult to find in today’s crowded cruising world.
And exactly the kind of experience the Nautilus community exists to create.
An Undiscovered Brazilian Sailing Paradise
The coastline between Paraty and Ilha Grande is legendary among Brazilian sailors.
Outside Brazil, remarkably few international cruisers have experienced it.
Unlike many famous sailing destinations, anchorages here remain wonderfully uncrowded. Entire bays belonged to our fleet alone, occasionally shared with only two or three local boats. It was easy to imagine what tropical cruising must have felt like decades ago.
Every day revealed another secluded bay.
Another jungle trail.
Another empty beach.
Another reminder that true exploration still exists.
Sailing Into Another Way of Life
Perhaps the week’s most memorable destination was Saco do Mamanguá, often described as Brazil’s only tropical fjord.
Here, steep granite mountains rise directly from mangrove-lined waters, sheltering small Caiçara communities (pronounced kai-SHA-ra) whose traditional way of life is protected. Fishing, small-scale farming, and life by the sea have shaped these communities for generations, and boats remain the primary means of transport.
Lunch wasn’t served at a marina.
Instead, we tied our dinghies to simple wooden docks beside family-run restaurants tucked deep into the mangroves, where freshly caught fish and traditional recipes reminded us that authentic travel is often beautifully uncomplicated.
These weren’t tourist attractions.
They were real communities graciously welcoming visiting sailors into their world.
Experiences like this are becoming increasingly rare.
Sailing Is the Gateway
At Nautilus, we’re a sailing school first and foremost.
But we also believe sailing is a means to something much bigger.
A capable sailor gains access to places, people, and experiences that simply aren’t available any other way.
Throughout the week, sailing became the platform for discovery.
We hiked rainforest trails to spectacular granite viewpoints at 2000 ft overlooking Saco do Mamanguá.
We explored hidden beaches by dinghy.
We swam, snorkelled, fished, paddle-boarded, and discovered quiet coves that can only be reached by water.
One afternoon, local guides introduced us to the edible treasures of the Atlantic Forest. We sampled the prized Juçara heart of palm, tasted wild fruits and edible flowers, and returned to our boats carrying freshly made pesto prepared from leaves foraged in the rainforest only hours earlier.
It was an experience that perfectly captured the spirit of this Sailing flotilla.
Not simply sailing through a destination.
But truly experiencing it.
Supported Sailing Independence on a Flotilla
One of the things that makes a Nautilus sailing flotilla different is that you’re never simply following a lead boat.
You remain the skipper of your own yacht—making your own decisions, navigating your own passages, and enjoying the freedom that comes with independent cruising.
But you’re never alone.
Surrounding you is a community of fellow Nautilus alumni: sailors at different stages of their journey who share ideas, lend a hand when needed, celebrate each day’s adventures, and inspire one another to keep growing. Some participants had only recently completed their certifications. Others brought decades of cruising experience. Everyone contributed, and everyone continued learning.
Throughout the week, the fleet was supported by Nautilus instructors with decades of experience sailing Brazil’s Costa Verde. Their deep local knowledge—of anchorages, weather patterns, currents, communities, hiking trails, language, and hidden gems—allowed the group to experience these waters in a way that would have been difficult to replicate independently.
As always, the support extended well beyond navigation.
Even aboard modern charter yachts, a sailing flotilla presents opportunities to learn. A line wraps unexpectedly, an electrical connection needs attention, or an anchoring technique can be refined. Rather than becoming frustrations, these moments became practical seamanship lessons, helping every skipper build the confidence that comes only through experience.
That’s the Nautilus philosophy.

Ilha Grande: A Tropical Wilderness
Midway through the week, our fleet completed the 25-nautical-mile passage to Ilha Grande, Brazil’s largest island cruising destination.
Once home to one of Brazil’s most notorious penal colonies, the island is now a protected natural paradise cloaked in Atlantic rainforest.
There are no roads, no cars.
Only jungle trails, emerald anchorages, spectacular beaches, and warm tropical water inviting one last swim before sunset.
