Whether you dream of sailing on mountain lakes, or of one day sailing the oceans of the world, we can help you embark on your sailing journey. From June 15th-September 15th, we offer American Sailing Association instruction on Blue Mesa, Colorado’s largest lake and best kept secret. Unlike most mountain lakes, with their reputations of fickle winds, Blue Mesa has consistent afternoon winds of 15-25 knots, making for ideal sailing conditions. Its 21 mile length, including 96 miles of shoreline, provides plenty of opportunities for exploration, far from the crowds.

Complete Sailing Course, ASA 101-103 Certifications - $599
This intensive course, offered over a long weekend, establishes an excellent base from which to launch your sailing adventures. Through it students will acquire a solid knowledge of sailing, as the vast majority of time is spent on the water obtaining hands-on experience. We lay the foundation for those that want to start chartering sailboats in tropical destinations around the world. Upon completion, students can take a weekend ASA 104 course (Bareboat Charter certification) in a coastal location, leaving them fully prepared to start chartering.

This course is structured so that participants can come up to the mountains for a long weekend, and through an intensive curriculum, including 3 full days on the water, learn to sail. Participants attend a 3 hour theory class on Thursday evening, from 6pm-9pm. Three 8 hour days are then spent on the water, Friday through Sunday, from 9am-5pm. Curriculum Coverage

Blue Mesa Reservoir
Located between the towns of Gunnison and Montrose, in the mountains of Western Colorado, Blue Mesa is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area. We sail out of the Elk Creek Marina, the largest marina on the lake.

Boats
We use 25 foot Catalina swing keel sailboats for all of our sailing courses. Catalina Yachts, located in Southern California, design and build great boats. Our Catalina 25s are laid out like much larger sailboats, exposing students to the equipment and systems they will find when sailing larger vessels.

Instructors
Nautilus instructors are avid and passionate sailors, experienced teachers and guides, and love introducing people to sailing. They are able to meet students at whatever level of experience they find themselves; from participants that have never sailed to those that already confident in the basics.

Cost and Booking
The course cost of $599 includes a 3 hour theory session, three 8 hour days of instruction, the course textbook, formal ASA certification and logbook, and a year’s membership in the ASA. The course fee is due in full at the time of booking to secure the reservation. As soon as payment is received, Nautilus Sailing will send participants the course textbook, a recommended kit list, and area information, including a list of accommodation options, from campgrounds to B&Bs.
